Korea expresses regret over textbook `distortions`

The Korean delegation participating in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) conference in Havana, Cuba, delivered its deep regret to Japanese officials over the government`s approval of a `nationalistic` history textbook for middle school students.

Korean Reps. Chung Jey-Moon and Yoo Jay-Kun said that Japanese efforts to cover up or distort historic facts ran the risk of hindering the development of future-oriented ties between the two nations.

Although the Japanese government said the textbook in question was protected under the principle of freedom of speech, it must take responsibility for approving the book, the lawmakers said.
