The government Tuesday expressed its deep regret over the outcome of the screening of Japanese history textbooks by Japan`s ministry of education and science and urged Tokyo to take fundamental measures to avoid damaging diplomatic relations with its neighbors.

Korea is considering renewing a request that Japan revise the textbooks again if their contents are found, in a detailed review by experts, to be distorted or to have omitted major events in a way that is detrimental to future friendship between the two countries.

An emergency meeting of officials from the ministry of foreign affairs, culture-tourism, education-human resources, the state publicity agency and the office of policy coordination was called Wednesday at the downtown Central Government Building to discuss how to respond to the Tokyo government`s latest action.

Foreign ministry spokesman Lee Nam-Su said in an earlier statement that the Seoul government expressed its deep regret over the outcome of the Japanese government`s screening of a junior high school history textbook that includes contents justifying Japan`s past wrongdoings.
