An untraveled waterfall, Towangseong (photo) in Mt. Seorak will be open to the public in 45 years. The Korea National Park Service announced on Sunday that a new observatory has been completed near the waterfall and it will be open to the public all year round. Since the designation of Mt. Seorak as the national mountain in 1970, the waterfall has been open only in special occasions such as ice wall climbing competition.

The agency has set up a new observatory at a point where the previous trail of 2.4 kilometers from Sogongwon in Seorak-dong to Biryong Falls Course was extended by 410 meters so that visitors can enjoy the waterfall. Some 320 meters in height, the Towangseong Falls is one of 10 scenic spots in Mt. Seorak. In 2013, it was designated as beautiful spot No. 96, which is a state-designated cultural property. When Towangseong Falls is open to the public, only Yongajangseong Ridge (ridge in inner Seorak where some 20 peaks rise like dragon’s canines) and “Inner Seorak Mangyeongdae Terrace” remain as access control zone in Mt. Seorak. The agency plans to open Yongajangseong Ridge to the public as well.
