Hyundai Motor’s “Creta,” a compact sports utility vehicle aimed at overseas markets, recorded No. 1 sales in India for the third straight month since its launch in July.

Hyundai Motor said Tuesday that the Creta`s cumulative sales stood at 23,117 units in September. In June before the release, pre-orders stood at 1,641 units, which increased to 6,783 units in July, 7,437 in August and 7,256 in September. Currently, Creta’s contract orders are at the 50,000 unit level, and customers have to wait three months to receive the car. Hyundai expects to sell 100,000 units of Creta this year.

Hyundai Motor sold 42,505 units of this car in India last month, posting the highest monthly sales record and a 21.3 percent increase year-on year. Helped by such popularity, Hyundai rose to No. 2 in JD Power’s brand awareness ranking in India. India`s largest auto manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra sold 19,564 units in September, a 7 percent decline year-on-year, while Toyota sold 12,563 units, marking a 10 percent drop.
