The FedEx Cup Playoff of the U.S. PGA tour will kick off with the Barclays golf tournament at Edison Plainfield Country Club (par 70) in New Jersey, the U.S. at Thursday night (Korea time). The purse money in the four Playoffs championships amounts to 33 million US dollars in total. As 35 million dollars are also at stake as bonuses, a "race for money" to take a piece out of the whopping 68 million dollars is opening.

Only 125 top-ranking players from the regular season will take part in the first round of the Playoffs. Then, the number of participating golfers will be narrowed to 100 in the second round (Deutsche Bank Championship), 70 in the third round (BMW Championship), and 30 in the final round of Tour Championship. The top player in overall points in the Playoffs will garner 10 million dollars, which is paid in the form of pension after his retirement. The rest 124 golfers who participated in the Playoffs and players ranked 126th to 150th who failed to join the Playoffs will also be paid bonuses.

Defending FedEx Cup champion Billy Horschel had earned prize money for winning two championships in the Playoffs alone, plus 13.44 million dollars as the winner’s bonus. This year, a showdown between Jordan Spieth of the U.S., and Jason Day of Australia who have emerged as new rivals, is drawing attention from golf fans. Rory McIlroy, who handed over the top spot in world rankings to Spieth because the former only took part in nine championships due to injury will skip the Barclays, and join the race from the second round and seek to recover his lost fame.

Among Korean golfers, only Bae Sang-moon will take part before joining compulsory military service in Korea. Korean-born New Zealander Danny Lee and Korean-American Kevin Na are also seeking a bonanza.
