Soundtrack of the animated film "Inside Out" is a masterpiece, as great as the movie itself.

Its soundtrack is as amazing as images and the story about five different characters representing five emotions (Joy, Sadness, Fear, anger and Disgust). The second song "Team Building" of the Inside Out soundtrack album is a good example. The song starts with booming and deep sounds of a tuba representing "Sadness," and then goes with sad melody and cheerful tune to describe five emotions. The sounds of guitar, drum, ukulele, vibraphone and synthesizer are presented like a stage performance throughout 24 songs of the soundtrack album. Lively but melancholy theme song is also impressive.

Michael Giacchino is the music director who created this delicate soundtrack. He is one of the busiest music directors these days. After winning the Academy Awards and the Grammy Awards with the soundtrack of animated film "Up" in 2009, he has participated in various soundtracks of movies released this year, including "Inside Out," "Jurassic World," "Jupiter Ascending," and "Tomorrowland."

There is another album titled "Inside Out." It was recorded even 25 years ago. It is "Inside Out" of "Chick Korea Elektric Band" led by Jazz pianist Chick Korea released in 1990. The cover of album coincidentally looks like the conscious mind of Riley, the animated movie’s main character, where five emotions live. Among the colorful geometric structures, abstract characters are running on the cover.

Before I turned 25, I disliked jazz music. One of the reasons that I hated the genre was it did not create any emotion clearly. I felt that the chaotic music was built with numerous tense sounds and complicated harmony, which did not create an emotion. It felt like Seoul. People connect with others in this large and pleasant city, but they feel lonely all the time. Emotions are moving fast like faded blue color on a wide window showing fabulous night view. Jazz seemed like that to me.

In the album "Inside Out," playing of the five members - Corea (piano, fender rhodes), Frank Gambale (guitar), Eric Marienthal (saxophone), John Patitucci (bass) and Dave Weckl (drum) – are like five emotions in the animated film to make impressive scenes by creating harmony and discord. By the way, Dave Weckl will perform in Korea on Sept. 15.

Here I am, an adult who likes listening to jazz and have elegant tastes. He, who was a child once, is trying to restore the memories that are gone over the valley of oblivion in abstract and elegant ways.
