Korea University has won the MBC Cup college basketball championship for three consecutive years.

At the final of the competition held at Gyeongsan Gymnasium in North Gyeongsang Province on Friday, Korea beat rival Yonsei University 69-65, and has won the championship for three consecutive years for the second time after 1996. Yonsei, which aimed to win the cup for the first time in 10 years, thus failed to overcome Korea that was spearheaded by Lee Jong-hyeon (junior, 206 cm, 21 points, 12 rebounds), the best center at Korean college basketball.

Korea dominated the first quarter to post 23-11. At the third minute in the second quarter, the team seemed to be ending the game easily by widening the gap in score to nearly 20 points with 32–12. However, Yonsei, which has never clinched a championship title after last winning the gold medal at the National Athletic Meet in 2009, displayed equally strong commitment to victory as well.

In the fourth quarter, Korea started to be chased by Yonsei after Moon Seong-gon (senior, 13 points) and Kang Sang-jae (junior, 11 points) were exited due to five violations in succession. Yonsei narrowed the gap by banking on forward Choi Joon-yong (202 cm, 17 points), Lee Jong-hyeon’s school mate from Gyeongbok High School, and Heo Hoon (sophomore, 181 cm, 16 points), guard and the second son of Heo Jae, former KCC coach who was nicknamed "Basketball President." Yonsei closed the margin to three points through Heo Hoon’s layup shot with 50 seconds left in the fourth quarter, but failed to upset the game.

Korea overcame the crisis as Jeon Hyeon-woo, a freshman who was deployed as substitute, by scoring a finishing goal from below the goal. The MVP award went to Korea University’s caption Lee Dong-yeop (4 points).
