Only three Asian soccer teams will be qualified for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Three Asian soccer teams have generally been qualified for the Olympic Games where 16 countries compete. The 2012 London Olympics was an exception. Five European teams could have been qualified for the Olympics as the host country was in the continent. However, the UEFA gave up one team for the success of Olympic soccer, the half of the chance was given to Asia and Africa, respectively.

Three Asian nations of Korea, Japan and the United Arab Emirates were qualified for the London Olympics. Four teams – Gabon, Morocco, Egypt and Senegal – were qualified from Africa, and Senegal, which was the fourth in Africa, beat the Asian countries and headed for the Olympics.

As the South American Football Association has three teams – two teams plus a host country team – for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, four teams from Europe, three teams from Asia, three teams from Africa, three teams from South America, two teams from North and Central America, and one team from Oceania will be qualified for the Olympics.

The Korean soccer team led by coach Shin Tae-yong can be qualified for the upcoming Olympic games only if it is in the top three in the Asia Football Confederation U-23 Championship. The national team will play the first round of the AFC U-23 Championship to be held in Indonesia from March 27.
