The Korea Communication Commission, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of National Defense, and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries received the lowest grade in the government assessment for causing social confusion in pursuing policies and failing to addressing conflicts due to passive responses to major accidents.

The Office for Government Policy Coordination released on Tuesday the 2014 government assessment results on 42 central government ministries and agencies in a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Lee Wan-koo. It is the first time that the government unveiled the assessment results of all central administrative agencies.

The Government Policy Coordination Office told about the agencies that received the lowest grades, “The government agencies received poor grades because they were passive about regulatory reform or did not make sufficient efforts to improve and promote policies.” It also explained that they caused public concerns such as the corruption scandal involving defense projects and the Sewol ferry accident.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare had the highest grade but some say that the rating is far from what the general public think due to the child abuse in daycare centers and the illegal receipt of welfare subsidies.

The Government Policy Coordination Office plans to notice issues that need to be improved to each ministry and agency. It will also conduct an assessment of the heads of ministries and agencies in the first half of this year to recommend the dismissal of heads who show poor performance.
