Samsung Electronics was named as the most-loved mobile phone maker by American consumers, beating its rival Apple, in the 2014 American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI).

According to foreign media reports on Thursday, Samsung Electronics, which had ranked third with the score of 76 points in 2013, exceeded the threshold of 80 for the first time and obtained 81-point score, edging past Apple with two points gap. Meanwhile, Apple that had topped the customer satisfaction list for two consecutive years since 2012 fell down to the second place while receiving points in the 70s. Samsung had been ranked No.1 mobile phone maker in the ACSI for three years from 2004 to 2006. However, since 2007 when the smart phone era began, the electronics manufacturer has remained in the top two or three.

Especially, Samsung has never taken the first place since 2012 when the survey included Apple. However, consumer satisfaction for Apple’s "iPhone 6" and "iPhone 6 Plus" were not evaluated in the survey, which was conducted in the first half of 2014.

American IT media BGR said that this could be a big win for Samsung that had a very rough year in 2014.

Nokia and Motorola Mobility came in the third place jointly with 77 points. LG Electronics was given 73 points, ranked 7th following HTC (75 points) and Blackberry (74 points).

ACSI quantifies the evaluation data from American consumers who used products and services. It is regarded as the most powerful consumer satisfaction index in the U.S. This year, 70,000 consumers participated the survey that was conducted of 230 companies.
