Single elderly man dies, leaving food money for caretakers

A 68-year-old single man was found hung dead on Wednesday in his home in eastern Seoul where police officers who went to the scene found a cash of 100,000 won (94 U.S. dollars) and a note thanking the ones who would take care of his body and asking them to use the money for a meal.

The man, who was living on welfare, planned to move out that day of the house whose owner recently changed. According to police, he made a living from hand to mouth working at construction sites until he stopped working after his mother died three months ago. In addition to the meal money, he left 1.76 million won (1,649 dollars) in crisp cash in the name of utility bills and his funeral.

"The man seemed to have committed suicide as he had to leave the house he was living in," police said. "The money found at his house was delivered to his niece."
