Chairman Chung Mong-kyu of the Korea Football Association is in full football diplomacy.

He officially announced on Monday that he would run for membership of FIFA executive committee and sent official documents to football association heads of Asia Football Confederation member countries. He asked for support by writing, "I`m gratified to all of you for making continuous efforts for the growth of Asian football. I believe that Asian football can grow further through collaboration. To this end, I have decided to challenge for a membership of FIFA executive committee." Asia is granted with four quotas. The Asian Football Confederation chairman automatically becomes a member as assigned by FIFA vice chairman, and the remaining three are decided at the AFC general meeting at the end of April next year.

For the 2018 under 20 women World Cup and the 2019 women`s World Cup, Chung will submit hosting agreements and bid book to FIFA headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland on Thursday. After submitting FIFA application form for hosting the two events in April, he has completed talks with the government and jumped into the game in earnest. FIFA selects the hosting country of the under 20 women`s World Cup and the over 20 women`s World Cup in a lump.

Korea had successfully hosted the 2002 World Cup with Japan and the under 17 men`s World Cup in 2007, and has won the bid to host the under 20 men`s World Cup in 2017. If the country hosts the World Cup of the under 20 women’s and the over 20 women, it will be hosting all major competitions in FIFA. With Korea paying huge interest in women`s football while other countries are passive in investing, Korea`s football status is likely to be enhanced. While the host country of men`s World Cup is decided at the general meeting by 29 member countries, women`s World Cup host country is determined by voting among 25 FIFA executive committee members in March next year. Korea, France and South Africa are competing to win the bid.
