He has been discharged from the military as private first class six months after joining the military on April 28. The man in focus is Oh Se-geun, 27, who secured exemption from compulsory military service by acquiring a gold medal in men’s basketball at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games. Oh attended a ceremony of discharge from the military at the Korea Armed Force Athletic Corps in Mungyeong city, North Gyeongsang Province on Friday, and moved to the dormitory at Anyang Gymnasium, the home to his team Korea Ginseng Corp (KGC).

Oh said, smiling, “It still does not seem like realty to me. Until the time I joined the military, I never knew something like this would ever happen to me. Rather than seniors, colleagues of my ranks envied me more.” Oh is not in the best physical condition because he overworked for five months, wearing the Korean uniform while playing for the national team at the Asian Games. After the Asian Games, he focused on rehabilitation and weight training at the military athletic unit. Having made a comeback to the pro basketball, Oh now has big burden to shoulder.

KGC is ranking the lowest with one win and five losses among the teams since the opening of the season. KGC, which is in downbeat mood, has now good reason to regard as a giant boost to the team Oh Se-geun, who is tall at 200 centimeters and boasts solid post defense and ample shooting capacity. Oh said, “I often watched our team’s plays on TV at the military unit. I saw many loopholes in difficult tasks, including defense, as well as inferiority in our players’ height.”

Oh, who led KGC to its first championship as a rookie player in the past, will more likely play at a home game in Anyang against Orions, the lone lead in early part of this season, on Thursday next week, rather than at an away game against KCC in Jeonju on Saturday. As Oh already has experience of forming teamwork with KGC’ senior players Yang Hee-jong and Park Chang-hee, he will likely have no difficulties adapting him to the team. Lee Dong-nam, acting coach of the team, said, “With Oh joining us, we expect to reinforce our competitive edge in play under the hoop. The urgent task is for him to recover his sense and sensibility in games.”
