The Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office arrested Mr. Jeong, chief of staff of Gyeonggi Province’s Education chief Lee Jae-jung, on charges of allegedly taking tens of millions of won (tens of thousands of U.S. dollars) in bribes on Tuesday. Prosecutors raided his office in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, his house and Company W, a supplier of education materials.

Jeong has allegedly taken 40 million won (37,900 dollars) in exchange for a favor to two suppliers of education materials including Company W since 2012 when he was working at Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education. He was introduced to Mr. Yoon, Company W’s CEO, by Mr. Hyeon who he got to know at a baseball club in the Gyeonggi office of education. Company W provided the offices of education in Gyeonggi Province with the National Education Information System, website management service and educational software since early 2000s under contracts.

Prosecutors are investigating Mr. Jeong and Mr. Yoon to find out whether there is any official who was involved in the corruption case and the money that Mr. Jeong allegedly received was handed over to a higher level.

Jeong, who served as the administrative department chief at a high school, was promoted to an auditor for education administration in Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education in January 2011. Jeong worked for the transition committee as Lee was elected as Gyeonggi education chief in June, and later became the chief of staff for Lee since July 1 when Lee was inaugurated.
