The International Crown, a competition among nations that is hosted by the LPGA, will take place in Korea in 2018.

The secretariat of the LPGA held a press conference at Lotte Hotel in Seoul on Monday, and announced that the biennial event will take place in Korea in 2018. The convening of the championships in Korea for the first time outside the U.S. apparently reflects the nation’s elevated stature in the LPGA tour.

Underwriters Laboratories (UL), U.S.-based non-profit safety system certification firm, will serve as the title sponsor for the Chicago event in 2016, and the Korean event in 2018. The venue for the championship in Korea has yet to be determined.

The first event of the championship took place in July this year, with eight countries including Korea and the U.S. participating. Korea ranked third, while Spain was the inaugural champion. In attendance at Monday’s press event was LPGA commissioner Mike Whan, UL Chairman Keith Williams, and Ryu So-yeon and Azahara Munoz, who are among top golfers from Korea and Spain.
