Kim Hyo-joo, 19, sponsored by Lotte, has put her name in golf history. Famous for piling up records, this time she has hit the lowest round in both male and female major tournaments. In the first round of the Evian Championship at the Evian Resort GF (par-71-6453 yards) in Evian-les-Bains, France, she hit a 10-under 61. Invited to play at the last major of the season, Kim is leading, four shots ahead of second-ranked Karrie Webb (Australia).

This 61 is one better than the lowest major shots in LPGA history. The previous record was held by two women who had shot 62s in a major: Minea Blomqvist of Finland in the third round of the 2004 British Open, and Lorena Ochoa in the first round of the 2006 Kraft Nabisco Championship. The lowest major round for men was 63, which 24 have achieved. Kim said she did not know she had broken the record. She says she likes difficult courses and that she missed some in this round.

For 18 holes, she had no bogies and 10 birdies.

Kim, who tied at the event for fourth two years ago in her amateur days, enlisted caddie Gordon Rowan as she did that time. Said Rowan, she`s not a massive hitter but has a very decent length, and she’s so straight she missed the thick roughs. The Associated Press said the Korean teen made history at a major tournament.
