Sri Lanka has decided to build a new wooden bridge, which is famous for the iconic detonation scene of the movie “Bridge on the River Kwai,” in 57 years.

Sri Lanka’s electricity board plans to build the bridge in the movie in the Kelani region where the movie was filmed in 1957, AFP reported on Monday. It will build a bridge based on the drawings and pictures of the bridge at the same location in the next two years.

The place where the bridge was constructed for filming has turned into a construction site with little trace to be found. The Sri Lankan authorities came up with a plan for the construction of the bridge because many locals feared that the planned dam would harm the area, which is popular among tourists who visit for the white water rapids of the Kelani River.

The River Kwai is located in Thailand. The bridge on the River Kwai, constructed by the British prisoners of war, was not detonated unlike the movie and still exists. Most of the scenes in the movie were filmed in Sri Lanka.
