Dongbu Daewoo Electronics has opened its branch in war-torn Iraq and sent its staff in 15 years. The country is in the midst of a growing crisis as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) occupies the second largest city of Mosul and is waging war against the government forces.

“We set up a branch last month in Erbil in the north of Iraq, which is relatively safe from war. We are on our marketing efforts to locals,” Dongbu Daewoo Electronics said. “We have set up a goal of running a normal operation in the midst of civil war. We will impress local customers with after-purchase services, and build strong trust with major dealers for a long-term business success.”

The electronics company has started marketing efforts with the launch of its sales office. Early this month, the company held an event inviting some 300 local buyers from major cities such as Erbil and Sulaimaniya. It targeted the Iraqi high-end home appliance market, showcasing a three-door premium refrigerator, a drum-up washing machine, and a fryer oven. An “ice pack refrigerator,” which keeps food frozen for more than eight hours with ice packs, was particularly well received by buyers in Iraq that often has blackouts due to the unstable supply of electricity because of war.

Since the pullout of its office in Iraq at the end of 1990s, Dongbu Daewoo Electronics had sold its home appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, and microwave ovens in the United Arab Emirates through Iraqi locale electronics dealers. After being acquired by the Dongbu Group in February last year, the company has secured some 100 stores in China and created a new sales group for Africa and Southeast Asia to expand its business into the global market.
