Samsung Electronics will introduce its first smartphone built around the Tizen operating system. The new phone, "Samsung Z," will be released at the Tizen Developer Conference in San Francisco, which starts Monday and ends Wednesday, local time.

Tizen is an open-source operating system developed by Samsung and Intel to counter Google Android OS and Apple`s iOS. The Tizen ecosystem applies to a wide range of product categories, including home appliances, smart TVs and automobiles. In February, Samsung released Samsung Gear 2, a wearable device that runs a Tizen OS.

Samsung Z features a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display and a 2.3GHz Quad-core application processor. Samsung Electronics said it reduced smartphone booting time based on Tizen`s enhanced memory control function. The new phone also provides a safe UI due to a built-in fingerprint sensor.

The first Samsung Z will be available in Russia in the third quarter. "Tizen Store," where various Tizen-based applications can be downloaded, will also be introduced along with Samsung Z in San Francisco.
