Banana consumption increases thanks to aging populaion

Bananas proved to be the best-selling fruit, followed by tangerines and apples, for two consecutive years from 2011 to 2012, according to a 10-year statistics on fruit sales compiled by the Lotte Mart. Tangerine sales topped the others between 2003 and 2010.

The super-supermarket said aging population was the reason for the brisk sales of bananas. A source from the store said, “Among the customers of bananas, 35 percent are people aged 50 and older, which is quite high as they account for 22 percent of our customers.”

Being soft and easy to digest, bananas are healthy diet for elderly people or patients. The fruit, which contains plenty of potassium and minerals, is also known to help prevent stroke.
