Samsung develops world’s first 5G data transmission technology

Samsung Electronics announced Sunday it developed world`s first core technology that allows transmission of large volume data in a fifth generation mobile environment. 5G is a next generation mobile network that is hundreds of times faster than the current 4G mobile technologies including Long Term Evolution and allows the transmission of ultrahigh definition movie in one second.

Samsung Electronics said, “We have developed technology that can transmit data at speeds more than 1 Gigabyte (transmitting 1 billion bits of data) per second via an ultrahigh frequency waveband of 28GHz at a distance of up to 2 kilometers." The world`s first technology capable of transmitting and receiving Gigabit-level data in the ultra-high frequency of more than 6 Gigahertz has been developed.

5G uses much higher frequency than the frequencies currently used for mobile telecom, which range from several hundred Megahertz to several hundred Gigahertz. In such ultrahigh frequency waveband, however, radio wave easily can get lost, and the transmission distance declines.

In order to overcome these shortcomings, Samsung Electronics developed “adaptive array transmission and reception technology,” using 62 antenna devices. This technology adopts the concept of human ears that are capable of tracing the orientation of origin of sound. By applying 64 antenna devices that serve the function of a human ear, the technology allows transmission of radio wave to a longer distance in a specific orientation.

With the aim of commercializing by 2020, Samsung Electronics plans to step up research and development of core technologies for 5G mobile telecom, including the new technology.

Thanks to Samsung`s development of the new technology, research on 5G mobile telecom and discussions on its standardization around the world will likely pick up speed. China formed in February a government-led “IMT-2020(5G) promotion group” to conduct research on 5G technology, while the EU plans to invest 50 million euros this year alone to commercialize 5G technology by 2020.

When the 5G era ushers in, people will be able to freely transmit and receive using their mobile devices ultrahigh definition contents, 3-D movies and games that are up to eight times as clear as the images of full high definition video. Not only software but also smart devices are also expected to embrace revolutionary changes. New-concept smart devices that are far more advanced than smartphones and tablet PCs that are used today will likely be introduced in succession.

“People will be able to download large volume data files from cloud computing servers in rear time and use them on flexible monitors,” a source at the electronics industry said. "Wearable smart devices including watch phones and smart eyeglasses, which are currently in early phase of development, will be also commercialized in earnest soon.”
