About 40 percent of Koreans in their early 80s say they still have sex, according to the results of a study released Friday by the Korea Consumer Agency.

Analysts say more senior citizens are enjoying active sex lives thanks to the widespread use of anti-impotence drugs since the introduction of Viagra in 1998. Forty percent among those aged 60 or older who still has sex are found to purchase such drugs.

According to the study “A Survey of the Safe Sex Lives of the Elderly in Provincial Regions,” 62.4 percent (312) of 500 men and women aged 60 or older living in Busan, Gwangju and Daejeon enjoy sex. It also said that whether they continued to have sex is determined based on if they had sex at least once over the past three years.

Notably, 36.8 percent of those aged 80-84 said they had sex at least once over the past three years. Among other age groups, 84.6 percent of the 60-64 group said they have sex, 69.4 percent for ages 65-69, 61.9 percent for ages 70-74, and 58.4 percent for ages 75-79.

In addition, 56.1 percent of those who still has sex admitted to having extramarital sex after age 60. With a growing number of senior citizens continuing to have sex, more people are also using adult sex products and treatment. About 25.6 percent of those aged 60 or older who have sex said they used adult products as least once, while 36.9 percent said they used anti-impotence drugs.
