Twenty-eight former and current prosecutors who allegedly received entertainment favors from a construction executive will be summoned for questioning.
A fact-finding committee investigating the bribery scandal held Tuesday its first meeting at the Seoul High Public Prosecutors Office. The construction executive was also summoned the same day by the Busan High Public Prosecutors Office.
The investigation was videotaped and the committee will see the footage.
Committee chairman Sung Nak-in told the meeting, Regardless of whether (the mans) claim is true, the allegation itself must have disappointed the people, adding, Ill get to the bottom of the matter.
If the committees investigation proves to be insufficient, Ill immediately make up for what is lacking and request a complete reinvestigation, he added. If necessary, (committee members) will carry out their own investigations and strongly urge the prosecutor general to punish prosecutors confirmed to have received bribes.
The 28 people listed by the construction executive in a document will be first grilled by the committee. The committee said it will investigate them in a swift and thorough manner regardless of the statute of limitations or limits on disciplinary action.
The investigation will focus on finding objective evidence such as cross-checking of the bank check numbers in the accusers document and tracking of his phone records. His list will also be analyzed.
The committee said it will ask the prosecutor general to take legal action against those found to have received entertainment favors related to their work.
