“She’s here, she’s here!”

The College of Education at Korea University in Seoul was crowded with people yesterday waiting for figure skating world champion Kim Yu-na to report for her first day of school.

When the silver van carrying Kim, 19, showed up, some 100 reporters and Korea University students flocked to see her.

Though admitted to the university’s physical education department last year, Kim was unable to attend the entrance ceremony for freshmen because of training and the world championships.

When she appeared yesterday, students welcomed her with loud applause. After talking with Kang Sun-bo, the dean of the education college, and Ryu Tae-ho, the head of the physical education department, for some 15 minutes, she moved to the office of the university’s president by car.

When news of her appearance spread, the crowd doubled. Students followed her van, yelling “Welcome!” They took pictures of her with their cell phones and digital cameras.

Kim received her student ID card and Maria Shriver’s “Just Who Will You Be?” from Korea University President Lee Gi-soo at his office. “I’m glad to come to school for the first time after becoming a college student. Though I might not be able to take many classes, I’ll do my best to be a good student as well as a good figure skater,” she said.

Kim borrowed three books from the library and got a medical checkup at the Korea University Anam Hospital.

Having returned to Korea Tuesday, she seemed a bit tired. A source from Kim’s management agency IB Sports said, “Yu-na feels a little uncomfortable because she’s getting more attention than last year. She’ll seldom appear in public.”
