As information about possible terrorist attacks against Koreans in Iraq comes in successively, a growing number of Koreans there have purchased guns to protect themselves.

Lee, who is staying in Arbil where Korea’s Zaitoon Unit is stationed, said, “Many of the 66 Koreans in Arbil have guns for self-protection.” He showed a small revolver and said, “You can easily buy a revolver for $40-$100 and an AK-47 rifle for $100.”

“I bought the gun because I don’t feel assured when I’m out even though two civil army soldiers escort Korean civilians,” said Lee. “People intentionally expose their guns to protect themselves.”
