The National Gaya Cultural Heritage Institute under the Cultural Heritage Administration on Sunday published a report containing records of excavation of “Haman Seongsan Fortress,” Historic Site No. 67, from 2010 to 2012. The report contains the structure and characteristic of the fortress in Haman, South Gyeongsang Province, including how the fortress wall in its southeast section was built.

The report includes explanations on 177 relics that were unearthed, including “mokgan” (document or letter written on wooden pieces that are cut in specific forms) and “georitdae” (pitchfork used in overturning or scooping manure), which have yet to be disclosed to the public.

Many of the items discovered at the fortress are “hachal mokgan,” or labels with names of places, persons and items marked on them. The items include “mokgan” believed to suggest 15 sags of barley are placed at Mt. Cheolsan.

The cultural heritage institute said the latest excavation project has made important academic contributions to identifying the method of construction, structure of drainage, and composition of wooden labels at ancient fortresses. The report will be distributed to research institutes at home and abroad, and national and public libraries across the nation. It will also uploaded on the institute’s website (www.cch.go.kr).
