Japan`s Imperial Household Agency said Friday that the bodies of Japanese Emperor Akihito and his wife, Michiko, would be cremated in accordance with their wishes after they pass away.

Instead of holding on to the tradition of burial that had continued for about 350 years, it made the decision by respecting the opinions of the imperial couple, the agency announced. According to the agency, their tombs will be made just as it did for previous emperors but the size of the tombs to be located at the imperial burial site in Musashi, Tokyo, will be made smaller than those of the previous emperors. The agency added that though the emperor and the empress will not be buried together, their tombs will be very close to each other.
