Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Ryu Hyun-jin (picture) underwent a successful surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, the team announced on Friday. The surgery was performed by team physician Dr. Neal Elattrache at the Kerlan Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in California, U.S. in the morning of the same day. It was reported that the surgery was performed to stitch torn part in Ryu’s left shoulder and clean up the rest. “The arthroscopic surgery was successful. If following the expected procedures, Ryu is expected to be ready for spring training,” Dodgers said in its official statement.

Welcoming the good result, Manager Don Mattingly said, “It sounded like a really good result.” Ryu, who visited the clinic accompanied by a staff from his agent Scott Boras Corporation, went home on a wheelchair wearing a cap and sunglasses after the surgery. “My condition is good. I will tell many things about the surgery tomorrow (on May 23),” said the 28-year-old pitcher. Ryu plans to hold an official press conference at the Dodgers Stadium to explain his progress and conditions after the shoulder surgery.

While reporting on Ryu’s surgery news, the Los Angeles Times said shoulder operations no longer viewed as death sentences to pitchers’ careers while they are still considered far riskier than elbow surgeries. The daily forecasted 50 percent of possibility for Ryu’s successful return, mentioning the cases of Roger Clemens, who successfully returned after a torn labrum surgery and won the Cy Young, and Dodgers’ pitcher Jason Schmidt, who failed to restore performance. Ryu is in the third year of a six-year and his contract expires at the end of the 2018 season, the U.S daily added.
