SK Telecom will be a staunch backer of the Korean national speed skating team.

Korea Skating Union and SK Telecom held a sponsorship agreement ceremony Wednesday and the latter will give 2.6 billion won (2.36 U.S. million dollars) to the Korean national speed skating team for four years until 2018 when the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games is held.

The telecom service provider will spend 650 million won (588,821 dollars) each year in selecting and training national team players and holding major competitions. SK Telecom also promised to support finding and fostering talented players to expand the base of Korea`s speed skating sector.

To upgrade national team`s training, the union in July brought in Erik Bouwman, former coach of the Dutch national junior speed skating team. It also increased the number of off-season training days to 40 days. Last month, the union signed a memorandum of understanding with the skating union of the Netherlands that dominates the world speed skating to adopt Dutch style scientific training techniques. A union official said, "We are holding various international competitions including the International Skating Union Speed Skating World Cup for successful hosting of Pyeongchang Olympics. SK Telecom`s sponsorship will offer great help in promoting various projects to enhance athletic performance.
