Korean Men’s Archery Team Also Victorious
AUGUST 22, 2004 22:06
Korean men’s archery achieved two consecutive victories.

On August 21, the “taeguk archery trio” of Jang Yong-ho (Yecheon County), Im Dong-hyun (Chungbuk Physical High School) and Park Kyoung-mo (Gyeyang County), comfortably defeated Taiwan 251 to 244 in the 2004 Olympic men’s archery team finals held at the Panathinaiko Stadium in Athens.

With this win, Korea has two consecutive wins in the men’s team event following the 2000 Sydney Olympics, and contributed to sweeping three out of four gold medals in the archery events, including the women’s individual and team golds.

Going through the round of 16 by default, Korea defeated the Netherlands by one point 250–249 in the round of eight, and won 242 – 239 in a close contest with the Ukraine in the semifinals.

Korean women’s handball reached the round of eight in an effort to recapture the gold in the 12 years since the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

On August 22, gaining strength from seven consecutive goals by Wu Sun-hee (Samcheok City Hall) and Lee Sang-eun, Korea won a huge victory over Spain by a score of 36- 21 in the women’s handball round robin match in group B held at the Faliro Coastal Zone Olympic Complex.

With this outcome, Korea has recorded two wins and a tie, the same as the Netherlands. However, by virtue of goals scored, they ranked first in their division and moved on to the round of eight regardless of their next game with France. On the other hand, the women’s field hockey team failed to advance to the quarterfinals.

In the fourth qualifying game for group B women’s field hockey held at the Helliniko Olympic Complex, Korea lost to Germany 2-3, posting two wins, a tie and two losses. Only the top two teams in each group advance, and the Korean team was pushed out after finishing fourth, halting their efforts to reach the quarterfinals.
