The Korean government will offer a combined 10 million U.S. dollars in assistance to earthquake-ravaged Haiti with the private sector.

The Foreign Affairs and Trade Ministry said yesterday, “We decided to offer 10 million dollars comprising 7.5 million dollars from the government -- 2.5 million dollars in short-term emergency aid and five million dollars in mid to long-term aid for recovery and reconstruction -- and 2.5 million dollars collected by the private sector.”

The short-term emergency aid funds will come from the government’s budget for emergency aid worth eight million dollars, and the recovery and reconstruction funds will come from the budget for a grant aid administered by the Korea International Cooperation Agency.

With the pledge of 10 million dollars in aid, Korea is known to rank sixth or seventh among donor nations helping the island country.

The Samsung Group pledged one million dollars in aid yesterday, the largest donation among Korean businesses, through the Korean National Red Cross.

The Digital Board, an organization representing LG Electronics workers, and representatives of the LG union delivered 50 million won (44,000 dollars) to the Seoul office of Good Neighbors, an international aid agency.

LG’s Panama office will send relief goods such as medicine worth 60,000 dollars, and Hyundai Heavy Industries will dispatch a 21-ton and an 11-ton excavator with drivers to Haiti.
