Re-deployment of U.S Military Forces in Asia

Douglas Feith, U.S undersecretary of defense policy, announced that the U.S. would re-deploy its military forces in Asia and build new linkages in order to respond quickly to threats, such as terror and the spread of killing weapons.

During an interview with Nihon Geizai Shimbun on February 22, Feith said that the reorganization of U.S. military forces in Asia would be applied not only to U.S. Forces Korea – U.S. Forces Japan, but also to Australia and Singapore, in respect of negotiations concerning new cooperation for security.

“We don’t intend to establish newly big military bases,” Feith said. “The main change will be reorganization of military facilities, joint strategy and training, participation in the legal process (approving the use of military bases in case of emergency).” It means that U.S. military forces will be deployed like stepping-stones to heighten the ability of immediate response to emergency, while building loose cooperative relations with each country.

According to this newspaper, it is possible that U.S. will ask Korea and Japan for stronger support in order to improve the mobility of U.S. Forces Korea – U.S. Forces Japan, even though it doesn’t know whether this reorganization will feasible or not until the U.S. general election on November.

Further, this newspaper has analyzed that whole scale of U.S. military forces will be decreased, though Feigh didn’t mention about scale after reorganization.

Feith announced that the U.S. would build a joint-training facility in Australia and Singapore, after the re-deploying of U.S. Forces Korea – U.S. Forces Japan.
