The main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy’s (NPAD) three likely runners for party leadership will resign from their positions at its emergency steering committee.

Moon Hee-sang, the party’s interim leader, told reporters Thursday that the “big three” members – Moon Jae-in, Park Jie-won and Chung Sye-kyun – would be required to tender their letters of resignation next Wednesday.

The NPAD leader said that the party’s convention preparation committee will submit to its top decision-making panel on December 17 a proposal for the rules and process for the upcoming election of its new chairman, before concluding it at a party affairs committee meeting.

Some of the party’s minor candidates who announced their bids for leadership urged the “big three” potential runners to resign from their positions at the top decision-making body so that they will not be able to affect the election rules. However, the three will remain on their positions until they get involved in determining the election rules.

The NPAD leader said that the election rules are set by the party convention preparation committee and that the top decision-making body would pass the proposed rules without changing them. “The big three do not make the rules,” he said.
