Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik on Wednesday ordered the Cabinet to "stop the spread" of xenophobia in Korean society, calling it a “social pathological phenomenon.”

Chairing a government committee meeting on policies for multicultural families, he said, “Negative perceptions of and discrimination against multicultural families and foreigners hinder social diversity and integration.” He also called racism a “social pathological phenomenon” that should not take root in Korea.

“In the age of globalization, multiculturalism is not a choice but a must,” he said, ordering the Cabinet to take measures to prevent xenophobia or negative perceptions about foreigners from becoming deeper or spreading.
