The Yonhap News Agency reported citing a source for North Korea on December 19 that recently, Kim Jong Nam (33 years old), a son of Kim Jong Il, was in jeopardy and to be assassinated during his visit to Australia, but just managed to tide over the crisis thanks to the protection of the Australian intelligence agency.

According to Yonhap, the source said “Kim Jong Nam was in danger of being assassinated in the middle of last month, but the Australian intelligence agency captured this previously and guarded him very closely. As far as I know, opponents of Kim Jong Nam in North Korea tried to assassinate him.”

In addition, having captured the information on a plan to assassinate Kim Jong Nam, the Anti-Terrorism Bureau of the Ministry of Home Affairs of Australia called North Korean Ambassador to Australia Kim Gwang Sop and strongly delivered its Australian opinion that the assassination trial should be suspended. According to the Yonhap News Agency, Ambassador Kim reported this to North Korea and the Yonhap News Agency analyzed the event that “this event was a trial by the surroundings of Kim Jong Chol (23 years old) and Kim Jong Woon (20 years old), who were born to Kim Jong Il and the late Ko Young Hee. They were concerned that Kim Jong Nam may succeed to Kim Jong Il.” Kim Jong Nam was born to Kim Jong Il and the late Song Hye Rim.

In response to this, a South Korean official said that “it is unpersuasive that North Korea, which strongly demands to remove North Korea from the list of terrorism supporting countries in the negotiation with the U.S., tried an assassination in Australia, an advanced human rights country.”
