Six-Nation Conference Resumes Today

The South Korean representative mission, which will participate in “the first executive group conference of the six-nation conference for resolving the North Korea nuclear weapon problem” beginning on May 12 in Beijing, China, will contact with the Chinese representative mission on May 10 to exchange views in advance, a person related to the government said.

The South Korean representative mission, which Cho Tae-yong, a representative of the international relations planning department of North Korean nuclear weapons, leads, will contact the U.S., Japan and Russia on May 11. On the other hand, representative missions will establish the direction of the conference and our position by holding a Korea-U.S.-Japan three-nation conference.

A person related to government said, “It is not sure whether there will be contact between South Korea and North Korea before the beginning of the main conference on May 12. However, a special discussion could be held during the main conference, if necessary.

It is known that the executive group conference anticipated sometime by the end of June is for preparing the third six-nation main conference, and it will be proceeded in the form of free discussion, without any special agenda.

The place for conference was decided as Tiao Yu Tai islands, Beijing, like in the second six-nation conference.

Ri Gun, a deputy director general of the North`s foreign ministry, Joseph DeTrani, the U.S. special envoy for North Korean affairs, Ning-fu-quei, an ambassador of international relations regarding North Korea nuclear weapons, and Valerie Suhinin, a deputy director of the first bureau in the ministry of foreign affairs, will participate in this conference as a representative of each country.
