Nationwide inspections on the discipline of public officials will be conducted by the Board of Audit and Inspection (BAI) in January of next year.

An official of the Board of Audit and Inspection said yesterday that special inspections on the discipline of public officials are planned to start from mid-January 2004 through the end of the month, as soon as personnel shifts of the BAI are completed. He explained, “Inspection will be mainly targeted to the slackened disciplines such as the inveterate transfer of money and other articles, personal leaves during work hours, entertainment, and so forth, which are likely to happen ahead of national holidays.”

He added, “Self-governing bodies whose governor or mayor are resigned to the purpose of running for the 17th general election, in particular, will be more scrutinized, considering there may be a 6-month period of political vacuum,” hinting the level of inspection would be more intensive.

The BAI is also planning to move forward an examination on the “Dilemma of Buan County” in North Cholla Province, the place that has suffered for over five months because of the government’s plan to locate the nuclear waste disposal site. Conflicts on Buan County is considered to be an obvious inspection target, given that the government’s policy establishment, decision making process, and follow-up reactions were inadequate for the renewal of the selection process of the nuclear waste disposal site.
