The Seoul Metropolitan Government has drawn measures to improve traffic flows in accordance with a project to turn the elevated road in front of Seoul Station into a public park. Considering that an alternative road cannot be built any time soon, the city plans to widen detour roads and change the traffic signal system to minimize traffic congestions in the area.

"We will diffuse traffic with detour roads until a replacement road is built," a Seoul official said Thursday, adding the city government was consulting with the police based on the result of a study on traffic improvement.

Under the plan, a new lane will be added to the road from the Yeomcheon Intersection toward Seoul Station. The Cheongpa Road behind the station will be added with a new lane on both sides.

The city also plans to change the traffic signal system to allow vehicles to head directly to the Namdaemun Market from Seoul Station. Currently, drivers have to detour to the Sejong Boulevard to get to the market from Seoul Station. The new system will allow drivers to go straight to the Toegye Road to reach the market. In addition, a go-straight signal will be added to the Yeomcheon Intersection in both directions.

The city government plans to announced the measures at the on-site mayor`s office event scheduled for April 17 to 19. However, merchants and residents of the affected area are protesting the plant, demanding that a replacement road be built.
