Students victimized by the problem and education officials have welcomed the court decision ruling that a world geography question in last year`s state-administered university entrance examination was faulty.

"Thinking about the students who lost one year because of the erroneous problem, I still feel sorry," said Park Dae-hoon, a former lecturer on an education TV channel who first raised issue with the problem in the College Scholastic Ability Test and filed an administrative lawsuit. "I would not feel happy until I see students actually relieved by the decision."

Song Ho-yeol, a professor of geography education at Seowon University, said that it was "fortunate" for the issue to be solved.

The decision will likely ensue a series of damages lawsuits filed by students affected by the erroneous question. Kim Joon-tae, 19, who lost a point in the exam because of the problem, said he planned to seek damages because he failed to enter the university he applied to and is now attending another one.

Kim Hyun-chul, a lawyer who filed a lawsuit against the Korea Institute of Curriculum & Evaluation, a state-funded agency in charge of the exam, said that students who are seeking a second chance for admission or attending universities after failing to be admitted by the ones they wanted lost a year. He noted that he would file damages lawsuits for them within this year.
