"The Korean Wave has also taken a strong hold in Romania. That`s why I came to Korea."

This was what five Romanian people said when they were arrested by police. Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said Tuesday that it arrested five Romanians, who came to Korea in September and are alleged to have used fake credit cards to buy luxury goods worth 120 million won (113,744 U.S. dollars). They are alleged to have violated the Credit Financial Business Law.

Formerly working as a taxi driver or at a briquette factory etc. in home country, they were tempted by criminal gangs there who asked them to buy luxury goods in Korea with credit cards. The gangs promised a return of 10 percent of total for compensation. When the five people arrived in Korea, they used fake Spanish passports and credit cards with the same false names, and purchased luxury bags, shoes, watches, gold turtles and laptops.

It was confirmed that they used more than 200 credit cards in Korea, which were issued in 19 countries including Thailand and Malaysia. "The cards were made by copying the personal information with card copying machine," police said. "They targeted Korea where magnetic card reader devices are used more instead of IC card readers that are more secure."
