GS EPS, a utility affiliate of GS Group, has completed Asia’s largest-scale biomass power plant of 105 megawatt at Bugok industrial complex in Dangjin, South Chungcheong Province.

Since its groundbreaking in May 2013, some 300 billion Korean won (approx. 254 million U.S. dollars) have been spent for the plant, which can generate enough electricity for about 110,000 people to use for an hour.

Biomass is fuel generated from plant resources such as sugar canes. GS EPS’s plant uses Palm Kernel Shells (PSK). The biomass plants are regarded as representative eco-friendly plants as they have lesser carbon emission than plants of liquefied natural gas (LNG) or coal thermal power generation. “We need creative strategies, not imitation, which enable us to facilitate innovation ahead of others so that the company can grow into a top-tier global one,” said Huh Chang-soo, GS Group Chairman, stressing that “Through the operation of newly-completed biomass plant, GS EPS will accumulate business know-how and technology for new renewable energy and make active inroads into the global power generation market.” Currently, Korea has three more biomass power plants run by Korea East-West Power Corporation, Korea Midland Power Co.,Ltd., Jeonju Paper but GS EPS’ plant is the only one with the generation capacity of 100 megawatt or higher.
