Samsung Electronics smartwatch "Gear S2" is one of the electronic gadgets that draw the biggest attention at the IFA 2015, which kicked off in Berlin, Germany on Friday.

The smart watch’s modern design and state-of-the-art functions including "Samsung Pay," a mobile payment system based on the NFC, have attracted great attention. Another feature that caught eyes of industry insiders was its battery capacity, which can last 2 to 3 days on a single charge. Gear S2’s battery capacity is three times higher than that of Apple Watch (18 hours), which is now dominating the smart watch market.

The Gear S2 has a free-form 250 mAh battery. If it came with a rectangle battery, which is used in most of smart watches, the capacity would remain around 200 mAh due to the limitation of space. Samsung has made better use of the space while making the battery shape nearly circular, resulting in increase of the battery capacity by 25 percent. “The ultimate goal is to create a circular battery to make the best use of space inside the watch,” said a Samsung SDI spokesman.

The free-form battery is expected to be more widely used in smart watches based on curved designs, such as an ergonomics design that fits on the wrist. LG Chem, which leads the secondary cell market with Samsung SDI, succeeded developing of a hexagonal battery in June.
