A total of 5.18 million cars are found to have used expressways nationwide on Friday, a temporary holiday when motorists were exempt from expressway tolls.

According to the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Ministry and the Korea Expressway Corp. on Sunday, a total of 5.18 million vehicles used expressways nationwide on Friday, as the daily traffic volume on expressways was second biggest ever after Sept.8 last year, the Chuseok holiday (5.25 million vehicles). The daily traffic volume on expressways was third largest on Sept. 19, 2013 (5.02 million), the Chuseok holiday.

The amount of expressway tolls that motorists were exempt on Friday was tallied at 1.41 billion won (12 million dollars) in total as of 8 a.m. on Saturday. The Korea Expressway Corp. gave expressway toll exemptions for 24 hours to motorists who entered an expressway starting at midnight on Friday.

Traffic was heavy, but there was no severe traffic jam, which had been a potential concern. The maximum travel time from Seoul to Gangneung was 5 hours and 20 minutes on Friday. It was longer than the travel time (3 hours and 50 minutes) on the same date the previous year, but was shorter than 8 hours and 30 minutes that was projected.

During the hours when traffic was the heaviest on Friday, it took 5 hours and 30 minutes to travel from Seoul to Busan, and 4 hours and 30 minutes from Seoul to Gwangju.
