LG Electronics has reached 10 million unit sales of its premium refrigerators embedded with self-developed "inverter linear compressor" technology, the company said on Monday.

LG`s inverter linear compressor technology, which developed in 2001, enables motor to move linearly, compressing gas to create driving force, unlike the previous straight-line motion type. Compressor in refrigerator can be compared with heart in human body. Refrigerators equipped with inverter linear compressor boost high efficiency and noise reduction.

LG Electronics posted a surge in sales of its inverter linear compressor refrigerators with the record sales of 1 million units in 2007 and 5 million units in 2011, respectively.

A company source said, "As the sales of our premium refrigerators have recently risen in premium markets such as North America, Europe and Korea, annual sales are expected to reach 2 million for the first time this year." This means that LG sells four units of its premium refrigerator in one minute.

The company has continued working on inverter linear compressor technologies since 2001. Early this year, LG has embedded the 5G compressor, which raises efficiency by 32 percent and reduces noise by 5 dB, in its Double Magic Space refrigerator. It has registered or applied for 3,100 patents related to inverter linear compressor in 16 countries.
