A South Korean company has developed rechargeable batteries that are not only bendable but also rollable.

During the InterBattery Technology Exhibition held in southern Seoul on Tuesday, Samsung SDI unveiled the world`s first flexible batteries. The batteries are an advancement from the large-capacity curved batteries used on the Gear Fit, Samsung Electronics` wearable devices.

Samsung`s new batteries are based on its proprietary flexible structure design and material technologies and the batteries can function normally even after being bended and unfolded tens of thousands of times.

"We will develop products with higher safety and reliability within the next few years and secure processing technology necessary for mass production," the company said.

Samsung SDI also unveiled the "Pin batteries" whose size is identical to a capsule drug -- 3.6 millimeters in diameter and 20 millimeters in length. The batteries can be applied to a variety of wearable devices that require ultra-small batteries.

"The new batteries are "innovative products that can advance the arrival of the age of wearable devices," CEO Park Sang-jin said at the exhibition. "We aim to lead the battery industry with the next-generation battery products designed for the Internet of Things (IoT) and wearable devices.
