A report says Hyundai-Kia cars sold overseas accounts for the third-largest portion among a company’s total production of global automakers. Among 100 units, Hyundai-Kia has sold 85 outside of Korea.

According to the Japanese automotive industry researcher Fourin’s monthly report announced on September 14 on global automobiles covering the sales figures of automakers in 78 nations last year, Hyundai-Kia sold 84.8 percent, or 6.12 million units out of its overall sales of 7.22 million units in a country other than Korea. The overseas sales percentage of the automaker’s auto sales is on the rise, from 82.1 percent in 2011 to 83.8 percent in 2012.

Volkswagen topped the list of automakers that sold the most cars outside of its country, with 86.8 percent, or 9.4 million units sold outside of Germany. Nissan, the second-ranked, made just 4.58 units last year overall but sold 85.2 percent of its cars abroad. Rounding out the list were BMW, with 84.7 percent; Renault 82.3 percent; Honda, 82.1 percent; and Mercedes Benz 81.2 percent. Toyota, the top among the global “Big 3,” ranked 10th with 76.7 percent and General Motors ranked 12th with 70.6 percent.

Experts say these results were the result of Hyundai-Kia motors proactively entering overseas markets given Korea’s annual new car market is a mere 1.5 million units in comparison to those of the U.S. with 15 million and Japan with 5.4 million. The Korean carmaker built an overseas production base beginning with Turkey in 1997 and manufactured 54.3 percent of last year’s overall production volume of 7.55 million units overseas.
