Hyundai Motor Group has gained a positive response on its hydrogen fuel cell vehicles from Pike Research, a U.S.-based clean technology market researcher.

Pike gave the Korean carmaker 65.1 points in a survey of makers of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, putting Hyundai ahead of General Motors, Renault-Nissan, Ford and BMW, for fourth place.

The research company assessed 10 major automakers in 12 categories on the strategy and implementation of the development of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles including market strategy, product components, partnership and price. Daimler ranked first with 69.9 points followed by Honda (66.7) and Toyota (66.1).

Only four companies including Hyundai scored in the 60-point range and the gap among them was minor. The researcher considered Daimler, Honda, Toyota, Hyundai and GM contenders in the market for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

Hyundai earlier developed hydrogen vehicles such as the Tuscan ix and Mojave and plans to start trial production in partnership with the Korean government and energy companies from next year and mass production from 2015.
