GS Caltex said Sunday that it will set up next year a joint venture with Japan’s largest energy company JX Nippon and Oil Energy (formerly Nippon Oil) to produce anode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Anode is a key material for lithium-ion secondary batteries used in electric cars. GS Caltex Chairman Huh Dong-soo will visit Tokyo Monday to sign a contract on the new business.

Under the agreement, a plant will be built in the Korean city of Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, by the end of this year with an annual production capacity of 2,000 tons of anode materials, or 10 percent of last year’s global demand.

The four materials for producing lithium batteries are cathode, anode, the separator between cathode and anode, and electrolyte filling.

Korea has been completely dependent on Japanese imports for anodes.
