Samsung Electronics said Monday that it will launch next month "Galaxy Player," a portable media player without cellular functions.

The product will round out the company`s trio of devices that includes the Google Android-powered Galaxy S smartphone and Galaxy Tab tablet PC. Similar to Apple’s iPod Touch, the Galaxy Player will raise Samsung`s competitiveness against the long-reigning iPhone-iPad-iPod Touch lineup.

The Galaxy Player runs on the Android 2.2 Froyo operating system and supports Samsung Apps and Android Market Galaxy based on Wi-Fi capabilities, distinguishing itself from other MP3 and portable media players. Users can upload images and videos taken with an embedded camera on social networking sites.

Though the player is without cellular functions, users can still make a call through a micro wireless Internet phone embedded in the player via Wi-Fi. Video calls are also possible thanks to the camera and QiK program, a video calling solution.

The Galaxy Player also has an excellent MP3 player function. Samsung’s unique SoundAlive audio enhancing technology and stereo speakers enable virtual 5.1-channel surround sound when watching videos and CD-quality sound when listening to music.

The Galaxy Player resembles the Galaxy S in form and function but has a different display. The four-inch super-clear LCD screen performs better than normal LCDs but is not as clear as that of the AMOLED-applied Galaxy S.

The price of the player will range from 300,000 to 400,000 won (260 to 340 U.S. dollars), but will be cheaper if users subscribe to a monthly plan.

Samsung Electronics will showcase the Galaxy Player at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas Jan. 6-9.
