Cheong Wa Dae spokesman Kim Man-soo announced yesterday that President Roh Moo-hyun will pay state visits to Egypt, Nigeria and Algeria from March 6-13 and return to Korea on March 14.
Rohs trip will be the first visit by a Korean president to Africa in 24 years after President Jeon Doo-hwan visited Nigeria, Gabon, Senegal, and Kenya in 1982.
In the fields of energy, resources, economic development, and social health, President Roh will try to diversify the area for cooperation with the African countries and plans to help Korean companies expand their businesses to Africa, Kim said.
Regarding Nigerias political instability, Chief Presidential Secretary for Unification, Foreign and Security Policy Song Min-soon said, We are closely watching the situation in Nigeria while getting reports from the local legation, and added that at this stage, the president will visit the region as scheduled.
